Black Movie (Book Review)

I got this in the mail this morning, much sooner than I expected (thank you, Amazon). I have wanted to read this collection for the past few months and I am no stranger to the work of Danez Smith. I have seen many of his spoken word performances on Button Poetry and this book intrigued me.

Black Movie is about 40 pages long. The poems themselves vary in length, format, and style though they all fall under the overarching theme of the title. Many of the poems center around violence and address issues of police brutality, systemic racism, and references to the author’s sexuality.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Black Movie and I look forward to hearing more from Danez Smith in the coming years.
