Top 5 Tuesday – A, B, C, D, E

Comments 3 Standard

So, I missed last week’s Top 5 Tuesday. I had a lot going on last week and I’m just thankful that I finally have time to write again. Oh, how I’ve missed this keyboard.

But enough of that, let’s talk about this week’s Top 5 Tuesday! Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely Shanah of Bionic Book Worm. It’s all good vibes and good times and if you’re on the fence about joining, just try it out!

This month’s theme is simple enough. Just pick out some books based on the author’s name corresponding with the letter in the alphabet. I feel like I just made a simple thing sound complicated so I’m going to stop yammering on and get into this.

A is for Achebe

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

I was planning to go by last name for these, since that’s how my bookshelf is arranged anyway. For the first pick, I’m choosing Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. It’s one of my all time favorite reads and the first story that really got me into post-colonial and African writing.

B is for Butler

Kindred by Octavia Butler

I read Kindred by Octavia Butler for my Intro to Lit class last semester and it is so good. Now I understand why it’s such a classic.

C is for Cleage

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage is one of those novels that is just so underrated. I feel like it should have so much more attention than it does. I loved it when I first read it in high school and I still love it now.

D is for Draper

Sharon Draper Books

I have so many of Sharon Draper’s books lined up on my bookshelf. My middle school English teacher is the one who introduced me to her writings and I haven’t looked back since. She really changed the game for black writers.

E is for Elizabeth Acevedo

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

I thought I was going to sort this by last name but I guess I was wrong. Shanah is pretty lenient with the rules of this (there are none) so I don’t think this choice will keep me up at night. The Poet X and With the Fire on High were some of my favorite books last year. Elizabeth Acevedo is one of my favorite writers and performers.
