Let’s Catch Up (#9)

Comments 6 Standard

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these and I really miss y’all. These past two weeks have been… weird to say the least. Have you been feeling like time is moving at the speed of light but also as slow as molasses, or is that just me?

Life Update

As you may or may not know, I had registered for five classes for the summer. One is the full summer, three were during the first half, and one was supposed to be during the second half. I decided not to go through with that second half class after all, which is probably for the best.

Finals for the first half of summer were during the last week of June. I had two essays and an exam to do so that was a busy week. I ended up with A’s in all three of those classes and for that I am thankful. They were also the last courses I needed to take to complete my Psychology requirements, so now I can fully focus on my English major.

After exams were over I was really spent. I ended up in a slump where I just didn’t feel like doing anything at all. I think it was also a mix of my general exhaustion with everything going on in the world. Sometimes we need breaks and this was my body forcibly hitting the breaks.

On the bright side, a few more of my poems are being published! I’ll probably post about it when they’re officially up but two of my poems were accepted by The Anti-Languorous Project and one was accepted by Super Dope & Extra Lit. I’m also dabbling in freelance work so if you have any suggestions for places to write for, please let me know.

Blogging Life

I’ve started to engage with other avenues of the book community. I’ve really gotten into Booktube lately, especially Black Booktubers. I actually got The Black Book Blogger Tag from these Booktubers. I’ll link a few of my latest faves below.

Even though I’ve been in a general slump, I have been reading. I recently remembered that audiobooks are a thing and I can get them for free from my library so that’s been great. For anyone wondering, I use the CloudLibrary app because that’s what my public library system uses. Some use Overdrive or other apps so it just depends on your area.

In terms of blogging, I actually have a ton of drafts for book reviews. I’ve just been so lazy about those recently. I need to get back into reviewing but I also want to do more fun posts. I just don’t seem to have any ideas. If there’s anything you’d like to see me write about, please comment below!

*Some* of my Favorite Booktubers

Mika just hit 10k subscribers and she deserves it. I love her energy and the aesthetics of her videos. She also happens to be Haitian-American, so that’s just an extra plus.

I’m lowkey obsessed with Joel. He isn’t new to the book community but he is very new to Booktube. His energy is unmatched and his editing is on point. I often find myself dropping everything to watch his videos.

Jocelynn’s dry humor gets me every time. I love the way she talks about these books and their characters, it makes me want to read every single one of them.

Mina is hilarious! I love her videos and her vibe. She’s super honest in how she feels about these books, characters, and their tropes.

Myonna has a super varied taste in books which gets me interested in reading outside of my usual genres. She’s also very blunt about these books, even if she can’t remember the synopsis.

So those are just a few of the Booktubers I’ve been loving. Please be sure to check them out and subscribe to their channels.

Black Book Bloggers to Check Out

Saoudia from With Love, Saoudia is such a sweetheart. I found her through Twitter and we’re planning a future buddy read. In her latest post she associated her Kpop biases with her favorite books!

Literary Leisha recently posted her review of Take a Hint, Dani Brown. If you like my style, chances are you’ll love hers. She has a great way of breaking down her reviews while talking to you like a friend.

Zezee recently posted her Mid-Year Book Freak-Out (yes, I still need to do mine). I’ve been following her blog for a while now and she has so much variation in the kinds of books she recommends. You can find just about every kind of book on her site.

How was your week?

What have you been reading?

Let me know in the comments below, let’s chat!

    • Yes! I need to put my order in soon because this could high key satisfy a Reading Rush challenge but I’m also hoping my library gets the audiobook 😭
