Hey y’all! As I mentioned in my review of the last comic collection, I absolutely love The Loud House. When I saw an ARC of the next collection on Netgalley, I knew I had to request it. It was basically shouting my name.
I didn’t mention there (but I’ve said it many times before) that I also LOVE The Casagrandes. It makes me so so happy to see that kind of family represented for kids and I just love it. Okay, now let’s get into this review!
Winter is about to get a whole lot more chaotic with the cast of The Loud House and The Casagrandes. Hit the slopes with Ronnie Anne Santiago and her best friend Sid or hit the ice with Lily who can skate like nobody’s watching. To warm up, enjoy a frothy cup of hot cocoa—but who has a better recipe, Abuela or Mr. Chang? Decorate some ornaments or a gingerbread house with the Loud kids—Lincoln, Lori, Leni, Lynn, Luna, Luan, Lucy, Lola, Lana, Lisa, and Lily. Or just curl up with your favorite online game… on a frozen computer. No matter, Luan has a puppet show to make you think of warmer weather. All this and more with laughs, family, and lots and lots of chaos.
Representation: Black side character, Mexican family, side character with Down Syndrome, extended family, Chinese side character, Jewish side character, a child with two male parents
The Many Reasons I Love This
The representation is really well done. Every character has a distinct personality and their own interests. Clyde is more than just Lincoln’s Black best friend. He’s also a kid with a ton of allergies and two overprotective dads who love him.
We get a really great look inside Ronnie Anne’s Mexican family and we even get to see some of her best friend Sid’s Asian heritage through the scene where they’re making hot chocolate in the style of their respective cultures. There’s even a full recipe for each!
Ronnie Anne’s younger cousin CJ has Down Syndrome and as someone who’s been volunteering with children who have Down Syndrome for the past 5 or so years, the show does a really nice job of representing him. He’s honestly one of my favorite characters and if y’all watch the show than you already know about that Pirate episode.
The holiday joy had me in the mood for Christmas. In all honesty, this story would make a really cute Christmas gift. Is it too early to start listening to Christmas jingles?
